- 2.0 out of 5 stars from nancy krone -- Hard to believe : I purchased this book 5 min after I saw the author interviewed on the Today show, and I was enjoying it immensely. Until I got to the part where she mentions DaDa joins a gym. And then several pages later resumes talking about her struggles with never having enough to eat. I believe her—she couldn’t describe her hunger that well if she hadn’t experienced it. What I find difficult to correlate is there’s money for her father to join a gym, but not enough for her parents to keep her fed. Book returned. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from AHG -- I read this book in one 10 hour period : I could not put this down. I saw the author speak online and immediately purchased the Kindle version. A story of three very brave people - the author and her parents. Read this book, please, including the acknowledgements at the end, as the story continues there. - 2.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- A little slow and a little uninteresting : The parts of her early childhood dragged on, they are important for sure. I would have liked to know of her young adult and college years. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kimberly S. Byrne -- Could not put it down! : Excellent read! It was one of those books that once finished, I did not want to start another books right away- so I could savor this one a little longer. The book is a must read for ANYBODY who is going to come in contact w children who are illegal or undocumented… really gives you a glimpse in to their world. And…. I have to say iT THE UNITED STATES CAN DO BETTER. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Nidhi Shrivastava -- A must read! : Qin Julia Wang's Beautiful Country is truly a one-of-a-kind memoir and I couldn't recommend it to everyone who wants to learn more about immigrant narratives. Following the footsteps of authors such as Patricia Engel's latest novel, Infinite Country, this memoir moved me. As a young girl, I could relate to Wang's love for reading books in the library (and the fear of book stores), her struggles to adjust to life in the US after her parents were from China. While she does not explicitly delve deeper into the political environment that her family faced during the Cultural Revolution, it is clear that the socio-political environment has affected her worldview. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from rn4kids -- Beautiful book! : I️ read this book in 2 days, I️ could not put it down. It is eye opening for those who believe undocumented people live for free in the US. The struggles the author describes are real for undocumented and documented people in the country where streets are supposed to be paved in gold. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Dozer -- Traurig-schöne Geschichte : Was dieses Mädchen in ihrem Leben durchmacht geht zu Herzen. So entsteht Hoffnung. Und Julie zeigt, dass man mit Beharrlichkeit und einem starken Willen alles erreichen kann. ( Reviewed in Germany on November 14, 2021 )
